Not sure what you have?
The model number is quickest. If you cannot read it, take the refill out and match it against the photographs.
Read the model number
The model number is printed on most Cross refill barrels and on the blistercard they come on — a number such as 8513 or 8523. If you can read it, search it directly and skip everything below.
Not every number on the barrel is the one to order by. Refills also carry a batch code from the production run, which is not an item code. The one you want is four digits beginning 8 or 9 — such as 8513 or 8523 — sometimes followed by a letter.
Getting the old refill out
Click pens and pencils
- The Click uses a retractable click mechanism rather than a twist.
- Unscrew the barrel from the grip section to reach the refill.
- On the pencil, the eraser sits under the cap.
Edge rollerball
- The Edge is capless, with a slide-open and snap-shut action.
- Open the pen fully, then unscrew the barrel to reach the refill.
Tech2
- A quick swivel action engages the ballpoint tip.
- The stylus is attached to the conical top.
- Unscrew the barrel to reach the refill.
Tech3+
- A twist moves the pen between ballpoint, red editing pen and pencil.
- Unscrew the barrel to reach the three short refills.
- The stylus top is screw-on and can be replaced on its own.
Any Cross fountain pen
- Open the pen and remove the spent cartridge.
- Insert a fresh one and close the pen up again.
- To use bottled ink instead, fit the push-in converter where the cartridge goes.

Common questions
Are Cross refills universal?
Within a family, yes — a Cross refill is chosen by the writing technology and the pen range it belongs to, not by the individual pen. What does not carry across is the housing: a full-size Selectip refill will not fit a Click, and a Click refill will not fit a full-size pen.
What is a Selectip?
Selectip is the housing used by every full-size Cross rollerball. It accepts three different refills — gel rollerball, jumbo ballpoint and porous-point — so the same pen can write three different ways. You choose the technology you prefer rather than a part specific to your pen.
Can I put a gel rollerball refill in my ballpoint pen?
No. Cross ballpoint pens and Cross rollerball pens use different housings, and the refills are not interchangeable between them. A ballpoint pen takes a ballpoint refill; a Selectip rollerball takes any of the three Selectip refills. If you want a ballpoint feel from a rollerball, fit the Selectip jumbo ballpoint refill instead.
Which is right for me — gel, jumbo ballpoint or porous-point?
Gel gives a smooth, wet line and is the standard rollerball feel. Jumbo ballpoint gives a ballpoint feel and lasts the longest of the three. Porous-point behaves like a felt tip, with a softer and more expressive line. All three fit the same pens, so it is a matter of preference.
Do I need cartridges or bottled ink?
Cartridges drop straight into the pen and need nothing else. Bottled ink needs the push-in converter, which sits where the cartridge would go and draws ink from the bottle. If you are buying bottled ink for the first time, buy the converter with it.
I have the older screw-in converter — what do I buy now?
The redesigned push-in converter has replaced it under the same model number, AT8751, and it fits Cross fountain pens. Order that one.
How do I find the model number on my old refill?
It is printed along the refill barrel, and on the blistercard if you still have it — a number such as 8513 or 8523, usually alongside the line width. Refills also carry a batch code from the production run, and that is not an item code: the number you want is four digits beginning 8 or 9, sometimes followed by a letter. That number is the fastest way to reorder exactly what you had.
My pen isn't listed, or it's a vintage Cross
Older and discontinued Cross pens often still take a current refill, but we would rather check than have you order the wrong thing. Get in touch with the model name or number and we will tell you what fits. Contact us.
